Jakkur Aerodrome
Jakkur Aerodrome is a small airport located in Jakkur, a suburb of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. It is the only general aviation field in Bangalore and is known for its flight training school, the Government Flying Training School (GFTS). This school has been operating since 1949 and offers training for aspiring pilots.
The airport covers a site area of 214 acres of land and includes facilities like hangars, maintenance areas, and a fuel station. It has a single runway that is 900 meters long. The runway is used for various aviation activities, including microlight flying, which is a popular adventure sport at Jakkur.
HAL Airport
HAL Airport is on Old Airport Road, Bangalore, Karnataka. It is about 12 kilometers east of the city center. The owner of the airport is Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned defense company. HAL Airport has one runway and operates 24/7.
The airport started in January 1941. It was the home of India’s first aircraft factory. During World War II, the British used the airfield. By 1946, commercial flights began. The airport grew slowly until the 1990s. Then, it expanded quickly as Bangalore’s economy grew. For over 60 years, HAL Airport handled all domestic and international flights to Bangalore. Today, HAL Airport is used for military and VIP flights.
